The year 1965 heralded a new era for the
suffering masses in Chennai when major Christian
denominations in the city of Chennai came
together for the glory of God and founded
“The Madras Christian Council of Social
Service”. It is an ecumenical body
standing by the side of the poor and the
marginalized. Since then it has been serving
the masses without distinction of
caste, religion and creed and rendering
yeoman service to the oppressed, dehumanized
and forsaken people.
From the original approach of being a relief-oriented
organization it shifted its focus to community
development and shared its rich experience
with other organizations. In the mid eighties
the focus was on Action – Reflection
– Education Process and in the new
millennium the emphasis is on ‘People’s
Empowerment’.
