Prevention of Trafficking in Women and Children

Greater cooperation between non-governmental organizations, the police and the public is needed to prevent the trafficking of women and children. The situation needs the cooperation of NGOs to create awareness among the population at large, especially in its vulnerable female and youth segments.

In September 2004, MCCSS fulfilled this role in the community by starting the project “Prevention of Trafficking in Women and Children.” The purpose of this programme is to prevent trafficking of women and children and to rehabilitate and re-integrate victims and their families. As a first step in this endeavor, research is conducted to identify and monitor trafficking areas. Informant relationships are secured all over the city to learn about specific trafficking incidences and create a bond between the community, social service and law enforcement.

Objectives:

  • Rescue and rehabilitate trafficked women and children
  • Provide shelter, counseling, skill training, employment and rehabilitation
  • Initiate campaign and advocacy against human trafficking
  • Provide medical, social and legal assistance for the rescued women and children
  • Conduct awareness programmes on prevention of trafficking to various groups

A Drop in Shelter for traffickked survivors and also for girls who are vulnerable to trafficking has been inaugurated recently and it provides the following services.

  • Counseling, medical and psychiatric care.
  • Legal assistance.
  • Police assistance.
  • Re-integration with family.
  • Education and employment assistance.
  • Referral services

An Innovative Rehabilitation: MANNA Canteen

As a measure of rehabilitation, “MANNA” Canteen has been started. The inmates of the Drop iN Shelter are given an opportunity to work in the canteen and earn a living. This Programme not only provides income but also acts as a therapy and an opportunity to learn catering as a trade.

The Canteen caters to the needs of the office staff, for all community and self help group meeting requirements. Room service to the guests in guest rooms, as well as for programmes booked by other NGO’s.

Manna undertakes outdoor catering up to a radius of 30 kms around MCCSS. A full time cook assists the girls who are trained in catering in 3 & 5 star hotels. The tariff will be sent on request

Awareness Programmes are conducted for schools, colleges, police, NGO's, high risk groups , community and public at large.
