Impact of MCCSS in the last decade

  • · Advocated women’s rights with regard to housing, privacy, marriage, pregnancy and abortion issues
  • Aided the appointment of regular professional counselors in family court and advocated gender balance within this forum
  • Joined with other NGOs to create the symbolic ‘Black Thursday’, a day where the staff wore black dress and stood in mute silence in public places, in different parts of the city, to express solidarity for the fight against ‘sexual violence against women’.
  • Raised awareness male dominance in society by raising questions about taking a husband’s name and using the prefix ‘Mrs.’
  • Initiated new measures to rehabilitate the Short Stay Home inmates and victims of trafficking
  • Collaborated with churches and other organizations to address social issues
  • Initiated appointment of professional counselors in the Family Court
  • Encouraged regular stream of overseas volunteers for field placements in our programmes
  • Created sustainability through income generation programmes
  • Sensitized police, judiciary institutions and the community on STI, HIV/AIDS, counseling, and trafficking issues
  • Released a book titled “Vanamum Vasappadum” with 100 success stories of Self Help Group women on March 7th, 2007, International Women’s Day
  • Coordinated with more than 90 hutment areas to form a housing rights committee of the people
  • Initiated awareness about HIV/AIDS among the general public
  • Published a book on legal rights of women
  • Published bimonthly newsletter, ‘MCCSS in Focus’
  • Provided community healthcare with 12 community health centers in slums of Chennai
  • Initiated and constructed low cost housing and toilets
  • Joined the Government Committee on Relief Activities during national calamities
